English. Tips&Tricks. Ch. 22. Learning to Fly.

 Switch to Russian

Thus, adhering to the fundamental principle of communicative methodology where the "auditory image of a phrase precedes its written form," we first enact the tale for the children using puppets, then alongside them. Only after the entire story has been ingrained in their minds as a unified vivid musical piece, akin to a vibrant painting, do we unveil the text in a book to the child.

Returning to our mountainous landscape illustration, envision several modes of movement:

1) Carving our way through rugged cliffs;
2) Crawling, plunging deep into vast canyons;
3) Soaring above the peaks, barely grazing their summits.

We opt for the third. The sensation of soaring above the lines, the ability to perceive a phrase in its entirety, to "hear" the climax of that phrase before it even begins – these are the quintessential skills a child should imbibe before delving into reading. This will free them in the future from the "complex of word-dependency" (the need to translate every word, the trepidation when faced with unfamiliar vocabulary).

The sensation of soaring above the lines is the key to future meaningful and swift silent reading, as well as beautiful intonation when reading aloud.

This is the foundation of love and passion for reading fiction, without which truly mastering a language is simply impossible.
