English. Tips&Tricks. Ch. 24. What Makes Up the Language Barrier?

 Switch to Russian

After discussing pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar, it's logical to make a generalization and delve deeper into the composition of the language barrier.

When surgeons remove stones from organs where they shouldn't be, they conduct a meticulous chemical analysis of the composition to prevent their occurrence in others.

One day, I'm convinced, the language barrier will crumble like the Berlin Wall, and its bricks will also be preserved in a museum. But for now, let's extract a few bricks from this barrier and inspect them closely.

Despite their diversity, three types can be identified - lexical, phonetic, and grammatical barriers.

Meaning, when encountering a "real-life" Englishman, our fellow countrymen, on the path from thought to spoken phrase, must perform three procedures:

1. Route the thought on a vast detour in search of new words;
2. Construct a phrase, applying grammar rules, measuring harmony with algebra;
3. And skillfully employ the tongue and lips to produce beautiful, correct sounds.

I've observed such dialogues with keen attention numerous times, and all these three processes were so manifestly evident that it was simply impossible to overlook them.
